The fact that some people treat dental care as something other than important and necessary for total body health always baffles me. For example, this current trend of “Veneer Techs.” I cannot understand how someone would be willing to have their oral cavity manipulated by an unlicensed individual. Why would they enthusiastically choose someone who has received a “certificate” after completing a one or two-day “course” over someone who has completed over eight years of dental medicine studies, numerous board examinations, gained state licensure, and completed copious amounts of hours in continuing education? I would not knowingly have any healthcare services completed by an unlicensed or non-credentialed professional. I wonder if these same people pick their medical professionals in the same manner. What is it about dentistry that makes some people think that dental healthcare shouldn’t be prioritized or taken seriously? This is problematic. Dental care is healthcare. I wish that some people would stop separating the mouth from the body.
Off my soapbox, what are veneers, and why are they so popular that some people would do anything to get them? Veneers are custom-made coverings for your teeth made of either porcelain or composite material. They are used to enhance the appearance of chipped/broken teeth, misaligned/crooked teeth, or stained teeth. They are also used to reduce the size of gaps between teeth. Basically, veneers are a cosmetic procedure used to beautify someone’s smile in hopes of achieving the “perfect” bright smile. It’s a procedure that can be done but isn’t a necessity. Veneers do not rid one of oral diseases or conditions that would be detrimental to a person’s overall health. I fully understand wanting that celebrity smile; however, compromising your health by taking shortcuts is not ideal. Once you’ve had the procedure done whether legit or with a “Veneer Tech,” there’s no going back. You can’t get your enamel back.
I believe everyone deserves access to ALL aspects of dentistry. For a cosmetic procedure such as veneers, the cost can be very vast. While “Veneer Techs” might offer a seemingly attractive option with lower costs and faster service, the expertise and assurance provided by a licensed dentist are indispensable. Here’s why choosing a licensed dentist over a veneer tech is essential for both your dental health and aesthetic results.
Training
Licensed dentists undergo many years of extensive education and training which equips them to focus on the overall health of the patient. However, veneer techs typically have significantly less training. They tend to focus only on the technical aspects of applying veneers.
Patient-Centered Treatment Plans
Every patient’s dental needs are unique. A licensed dentist can assess your overall dental health and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Because of their lack of knowledge, Veneer techs may lack the ability to offer this level of personalized care and may provide a one-size-fits-all solution that could compromise your oral health.
Diagnostic Tools
Dentists have access to diagnostic tools and technologies that are crucial for planning and executing veneer procedures accurately. Veneer techs often do not have access to these sophisticated diagnostic tools, increasing the risk of suboptimal results.
Comprehensive Oral Healthcare
A licensed dentist will evaluate and treat any underlying dental issues such as decay, gum disease, or bite problems before placing veneers. This comprehensive care ensures that your veneers will not only enhance your smile but also support your overall dental health. Without this broader approach, a veneer tech might apply veneers on unhealthy teeth, leading to further complications and the need for additional treatments.
Post-Procedure Care and Support
Receiving veneers is not just about the initial application. It’s also about ongoing care and maintenance. A licensed dentist provides comprehensive follow-up care. They’ll be available to address any complications or adjustments that might be needed. Veneer techs may not offer this level of post-procedure support, leaving you without professional guidance if issues arise.
The long-term benefits and security of seeing a licensed dentist far outweigh the initial savings of seeing a Veneer Tech. When it comes to something as important as your smile, trust the expertise and professionalism of a licensed dentist. Invest in your smile wisely; choose a licensed dentist for your veneers. Your future self will thank you.
